Bull Valley Garden Club preps for plant sale
BULL VALLEY – The Bull Valley Garden Club is getting ready for its annual plant sale on Mother’s Day weekend.
The sale will start at 8 a.m. May 12 on the Old Courthouse lawn on the Woodstock Square.
Plants will be sold until they are gone. The proceeds of the sale support scholarships for horticulture students at McHenry County College.
Every year, garden club members offer something new, and this year young redbud trees will be sold. The tree has attractive, heart-shaped leaves and a purple cloud of edible blossoms that are high in vitamin C.
Members already have started to grow herbs, including chives, lemon balm, parsley, sage, rosemary, thyme, dill, mint, basil, as well as plants with edible flowers, and unusual lettuces, such as Flashy Trout’s Back.
Members will be digging and potting native wildflowers, such as bluebells, wild ginger, jack-in-the-pulpit, columbine and celandine poppies, plus unusual perennials and grasses, from their lawns and woods.
Pumpkin plants from the Super Freak collection and floral bouquets also will be available.
Intrinsic Perennial Gardens will sell a full range of professionally grown plants.
There will be raffle drawing at noon for various garden baskets. Themes of the baskets include a Lady’s Basket, a Picnic Basket, a Spa Basket and a Bird House Basket.
