Renovation complete at McHenry Township fire station
JOHNSBURG – The McHenry Township Fire Protection District completed its remodeling upgrade of Station 2, while an expansion of the district’s oldest station remains on hold indefinitely.
Township fire officials met at the newly remodeled Station 2, at 3710 Johnsburg Road in Johnsburg, for the district’s board of trustees meeting Wednesday evening.
“It’s 100 percent completed,” Fire Chief Rudy Horist said.
The upgrades, estimated to cost $70,000, include new carpeting for both the first and second floors and a new kitchen. The station was built in the early 1990s, Fire Chief Tony Huemann said.
Meanwhile, plans for a 4,700-square-foot addition at the Station 1 headquarters, the township’s oldest station, are on hiatus. In April, trustees voted to further delay the project after bids exceeded what was budgeted. Officials estimated the addition to cost less than $3 million. When bids were unsealed in February, the lowest was $4.4 million.
Huemann and other officials said Station 1, at 3610 W. Elm St. in McHenry, needs an administrative wing to house more employees for training programs and central administrative operations. The building’s existing administrative office would be converted into a training room.
Last summer, a former apartment building and nearby office building were demolished for a parking lot to go with the station’s expansion.
In spite of the delay, Station 1 received and put a new ambulance into service this week, Horist said.
In October, the district board unanimously approved the purchase of the Ford ambulance for $125,176.
The McHenry Township Fire Protection District has four fire stations and covers about 56 square miles.
Aside from McHenry Township, the district’s covers portions of Nunda Township and rural McHenry County, and the municipalities of Bull Valley, McHenry, Holiday Hills, Johnsburg, Lakemoor, McCullom Lake and Ringwood.
The township’s next meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. June 20, at the district office, 3610 W. Elm St. in McHenry.
