Cary resident first behind wheel of new Scion sports car
CRYSTAL LAKE – Brian Atkins of Cary is one of the first in the country to own Scion’s new sports car.
Atkins received his 2013 Scion FR-S Tuesday at Pauly Toyota-Scion in Crystal Lake.
Atkins was one of 86 chosen to be the first to buy the new car this week in an online contest.
“It’s an exciting day,” Atkins said Tuesday. “I’’ve been looking, watching and waiting for this car to come out,” he said.
Atkins, who is self-employed with Atkins & Associates investment firm, traded in his 2004 Mazda RX8.
“It’s very light weight, with good handiling and better gas mileage,” Atkins said of the FR-S.
“it’s reasonably priced for this kind of car,” Atkins said.
The sticker price on Atkins’ FR-S was $24,730, and it looked like it couldn’t be more loaded.
He even likes the color. “It’s asphalt gray, almost black,” Atkins said.
Six of the first 86 owners of Scion’s first rear-wheel drive sports car were selected in the Chicago region, which includes Illinois and three other states.
The “First 86” contest was held online and the customers were selected at random.
The FR-S goes on sale to the general public on June 1.
Pauly Toyota-Scion owner Michael Pauly said most of the new cars have been pre-sold.
“We’re taking orders,” Pauly said. “It’s a limited production run. Scion believes in producing one too few.”
Pauly noted there has been a buzz about the new car.
“The (auto) magazines have gone crazy over it,” he said. “It’s been receiving excellent reviews. The best reviews I can remember.”
According to Curt McAllister of Toytota Motor Sales U.S.A., Scion is a brand under the Toyota name that was developed with a new generation of youthful buyers in mind. The selection of 86 initial customers is related to the significance of the number 86 in the development and details of the 2013 Scion FR-S sports car.
The AE86 (Toyota Corolla GT-S) heavily influenced the concept and development of the all-new vehicle, McAllister said. The engine also displaces an equal bore and stroke of 86mm, and the exhaust pipe exits beneath the vehicles rear diffuser are 86mm in diameter.
McAllister said the Scion FR-S offers rear-wheel-drive sports car experience with 200 horsepower.
“It’s designed for a youthful audience.” Pauly added. “It’s a high-energy driving experience.
“I usually don’t get excited about cars, but I am about this one,” Pauly said.
