Oakwood Hills police receive surplus Humvee

OAKWOOD HILLS – The Oakwood Hills Police Department recently received a Humvee at no cost through a federal military-surplus program.

The Humvee, with 6,500 miles on it, is valued by the military at $34,000, the federal Law Enforcement Surplus Office said in a news release.

The Oakwood Hills Police Department plans to use the Humvee for emergencies and to patrol the village during inclement weather and in off-road situations.

Because many of the village’s streets are hilly, driving in town during a snowstorm can be dangerous, with many streets impossible to navigate in a two-wheel-drive squad car.

The Humvee also will be used to transport large items, such as ammunition and large target stands used for firearms training, the department said.

Several businesses have donated equipment and time to outfit the Humvee for the police department, including Fox Towing and Recovery of Fox Lake, Sign-a-Rama of Crystal Lake, Ultra Strobe Communications in Crystal Lake, Veto Enterprises of Sycamore, A.P.B. Communications Inc. of Port Barrington and Lou’s Garage of Lake Forest.

Donations included emergency lights, a prisoner transport cage, mobile radios and “police” decals.

The department will have the Humvee outfitted and ready for service by September.

The vehicle currently has a military camouflage paint and may be repainted when funding or donations become available, the department said.

Besides the Humvee, the department also has obtained hydration systems for bicycle patrol officers, tactical flashlights for patrol rifles, blankets for emergencies, first aid supplies, tools and a portable generator through the Law Enforcement Surplus Office program.

The Humvee will be on display Sept. 8 during the Oakwood Hills car show.
