Firefighters arrive on the scene of a house fire Friday morning in McCullom Lake.

McCULLOM LAKE – A fire that destroyed a house Friday is under investigation by the McHenry Township Fire Protection District.

The 1,200-square-foot house at 5306 West Lane is a total loss, said Battalion Chief Joe Krueger.

“It was a ball of fire when we pulled up,” he said.

The homeowner was not staying at the house at the time of the fire, Krueger said.

No one was hurt. The fire was called in at 8:43 a.m. and under control by 9:20 a.m. Crews left the scene about 10:40 a.m.

The frame of the wooden house still is standing, but the floors are “pretty bad in some areas [and] the supports are burnt through significantly,” Krueger said.

The cause of the fire still is under investigation, and where in the house the fire started has yet to be determined, Krueger said.

The majority of the fire was in the front of the house. There are no fire hydrants in the area, Krueger said.

Fox Lake, Richmond, Spring Grove and Wonder Lake assisted at the scene. Cary, Fox River Grove, Round Lake, Nunda Rural and Lake Villa assisted with station coverage.
