Our view: A day to count our blessings

Americans have so much to be thankful for this Thanksgiving Day.

Despite the chaotic nature of the world, we remain a free and relatively safe nation, in large part thanks to the active members of our military and our veterans.

Our country faces some significant financial issues, but most Americans are able to put food on their tables and sleep in warm beds in homes that protect us from the elements. And we have caring people who work for support networks that help those who aren’t as well off as most.

Whether you liked the outcome or not, we just peacefully and freely elected our country’s leaders. Even though we’ve been doing that in the U.S. for more than 200 years, that’s still a significant accomplishment because in much of the world that doesn’t happen.

Here in McHenry County, our little corner of the country, we are thankful for our great schools and educators. We are thankful for our coaches and other volunteers who help our children learn teamwork and how to be the best they can.

We also are thankful for our police officers, firefighters and other dedicated public servants. We can disagree about the costs of pensions and other public benefits, but we can’t go without the vital public services these fine people provide.

We are thankful for our pastors, doctors, nurses, social workers and others who help to keep us healthy physically, mentally and spiritually.

The Northwest Herald is thankful for its readers and advertisers. Without either, we would not be able to provide the news, sports, features and marketing information you seek day in and day out.

Perhaps most significantly, we are thankful for family, friends, neighbors and work colleagues – those closest to us, the people who make us laugh and cry, and who give our lives meaning.

Take a moment today and tell your loved ones what you are thankful for. They will appreciate it.

And be thankful for today.

Happy Thanksgiving.
