Public servant

To the Editor:

I would like to echo “Be heard” from Jude Garner (It’s Your Write, Nov. 23). As a black American, I am extremely proud to be in this great nation. I am most proud of our men and women who have given their lives so I can vote, own property, and marry the women I love, regardless of race.

What I am not proud of as an American is that we have so many men and women who are homeless, hungry and alone. Yet, this country or state has done nothing to stop this dog chasing its own tail. Food thrown away at restaurants by the pounds and yet people are hungry?

Our elected public servants continue to have better benefits, pensions, expense accounts, food and warm beds at multiple locations. Abraham Lincoln made a profound statement at Gettysburg when he said, “for a government of the people, by the people and for the people.”

I am asking as a taxpaying American that all our public servants (elected officials) go back and be just that, our public servant. Put aside the party you belong to and do what is best for this great country and not what is best for you. Take away your perks and lavish health benefits and start your own 401(k) with your own money.

Solve the problems above and you truly would become a public servant of the people, by the people and for the people.
