SHARE-Loaves and Fishes offers holiday meal packages

McHENRY – Area residents can celebrate the holidays and stay on budget with the SHARE-Loaves and Fishes McHenry County Food Buying Club.

This nonprofit, volunteer-run organization helps families save 25 to 45 percent on supermarket-quality food throughout the year, and the holidays are no exception.

For $32, the club’s Christmas Dinner Package contains all the fixings to prepare a festive spread for a family of six. This year’s packages include a ham, sweet potatoes and all the fixings, including dessert.

Everyone is welcome to buy food through SHARE – there are no eligibility requirements or income limits. Families can buy and pick up their dinner package at one of two area locations, buy a package for a family they know, or make a donation and SHARE will distribute dinner packages to deserving families.

SHARE’s Christmas Dinner Package includes a 4-pound Black Forest smoked ham, sweet potato patties, premium dinner rolls, and a 24-ounce fruit pie, macaroni and cheese, 1 pound each of frozen beans and corn and a 1-pound box of potato flakes. Orders are accepted online at www.midamericafoods.com. Online orders must be placed by Dec. 9 for pickup Dec. 15.

The online ordering system accepts debit and credit card payments only, but SHARE-Loaves and Fishes also accepts cash, check or money order. Orders can be placed locally by contacting the local SHARE-Loaves and Fishes volunteer team at 815-690-2606 or by calling Mid America Foods’ main office toll-free at 855-832-7238 until Dec. 9.

Local volunteers also are available to help with orders from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Nov. 30 at Senior Services Associates, 3519 N Richmond Road, Johnsburg: from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Dec. 1 at Evangelical Free Church of McHenry, 2614 N. Ringwood Road, McHenry; and from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Dec. 1 at The Pointe, 5650 Northwest Highway, Crystal Lake.

Food pickup will run from 8 to 9:30 a.m. Dec. 15 at Evangelical Free Church of McHenry and from 9 to 10:30 a.m. at The Pointe.

Businesses, churches, service clubs and social service organizations also are welcome to buy dinner packages for their holiday outreach programs. Many groups raise funds and then buy holiday dinner packages through SHARE to distribute to local families in need.

SHARE’s efforts to serve the community with savings on quality food would not be possible without volunteers. More help is needed during the busy holiday season, but the need exists all year long.

For information or to volunteer, call 815-690-2606.
