Acorn Alley wins state Parks Award

CRYSTAL LAKE – Crystal Lake Park District’s Acorn Alley at Veteran Acres Park was selected to receive Outstanding Facility and Parks Award by the Illinois Park and Recreation Association. 

The award recognizes public agencies for their exceptional and unique achievements in design and development. Acorn Alley received the highest total points among the entries in its division and category from across the state of Illinois.

Designed by Hitchcock Design Group and installed by Clauss Brothers Inc. the facility opened in 2011. It features a nature-themed playground, splash pad and picnic shelter overlooking the scenic pond at Veteran Acres Park. 

Upon completion of a county bike path currently under construction on the east side of Walkup Avenue, the park will be easily accessible by pedestrians and bicyclists from surrounding neighborhoods.

Other improvements planned for next year at the park include a new parking lot entrance, signage and landscaping.
