Officials suspect arson in deadly Chicago fire
CHICAGO – Authorities say an early morning fire that killed a woman and badly burned three others, including two young children, is being investigated as an arson attack.
The Chicago Tribune reported that officials believe someone poured an accelerant around the apartment and possibly on the children.
Fire officials say a 5-year-old girl had burns over her entire body and an older boy had burns over 35 percent of his body. They were listed in critical condition at Stroger Hospital. The woman died at the hospital.
Authorities say they found an empty gas can behind the brick two-flat in the city's West Side Lawndale neighborhood, where Saturday's fire took place.
Relatives told investigators that someone in the house had mental issues and had threatened to burn down the house.
