Police: Cows killed when trailer overturns

EAST ST. LOUIS, Ill. (AP) — Illinois State Police say some cows were killed when a cattle truck overturned near an Interstate 64 exit in East St. Louis.

Trooper Mike Link says the truck was hauling 95 head of cattle westbound when it toppled onto its side shortly after 9 a.m. Wednesday. It's unclear exactly how many of the animals died. The surviving cattle were transferred to another truck. The truck's driver refused treatment for slight injuries.

The cause of the crash wasn't immediately known.

The exit remained closed into the afternoon but was expected to be cleared of wreckage by rush hour.
