The Northwest Herald announced Wednesday that Jason Schaumburg has been named as editor, effective March 4.

Schaumburg, a former sports editor and managing editor with the Northwest Herald, will replace Dan McCaleb, who is taking on an expanded role with the newspaper's parent company, Shaw Media.

Most recently, Schaumburg was executive editor of Pioneer Press, a group of 32 weekly newspapers and websites spread throughout Chicago's suburbs. Prior to that, he served as editor of the Daily Chronicle in DeKalb from 2009 until March 2012.

Schaumburg served as Northwest Herald's assistant managing editor and managing editor from 2004 to 2009, and as sports editor and assistant sports editor before that.

"Jason is an outstanding journalist who brings a wide range of skills and experience back to our newspaper and digital products," McCaleb said. "He knows McHenry County. He's worked with many of our journalists before. I'm excited to have him back."

In January, McCaleb was named group editor for Shaw Media's suburban group of newspapers and websites. They include the Northwest Herald, Daily Chronicle, the St. Charles-based Kane County Chronicle, Suburban Life Media and others.

McCaleb said he will continue to be active in the Northwest Herald's editorial operations, including serving on the newspaper's Editorial Board and writing a weekly column.
