CHICAGO – Funeral arrangements have been set for an Illinois State Police trooper killed when a semi-truck slammed into his squad car in Chicago's northern suburbs.

Trooper James Sauter was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash on Interstate 294 near Northbrook Thursday night. Authorities say his car was idling on the roadway shoulder when the truck hit it from behind, causing both vehicles to burst into flames.

Visitation is scheduled for Monday at Morraine Valley Church in Palos Heights. His funeral will be held at the same church on Tuesday morning.

Sauter joined the Illinois State Police in June 2008.

State Police Director Hiram Grau said the 28-year-old left a "legacy of courage, honor and duty."

The semi-truck driver was hospitalized for burns to his hand.
