Prescribed burns planned in Lake in the Hills

Published: Thursday, April 4, 2013 5:30 a.m. CDT

LAKE IN THE HILLS – The village of Lake in the Hills will conduct a prescribed burn today at Sierra Court Detention at the intersection of Algonquin and Pyott roads and Joseph Court Detention adjacent to Joseph Court in Lake in the Hills.

On Friday, a prescribed burn will be conducted at the Frank Road Detention south of Miller Road on Frank Road.

Encap Inc. will be performing the prescribed burns as part of scheduled maintenance to maintain this natural area.

Prescribed burns are an efficient and economical tool that reduces the amount of pesticides that otherwise may be needed to control invasive plants, according to a news release from the village.

Fire helps to promote species diversity by controlling invasive woody shrubs and trees.

Fire burns off dead vegetation and stimulates new plant growth by allowing sunlight to warm the dark soil, encouraging germination. Fire also enriches the soil by returning nutrients back to the soil.

During the burns, the village asks that residents keep their pets inside and keep windows closed.

Depending on weather conditions, the prescribed burns may be rescheduled the week of April 8.

For information, call the village at 847-960-7500.
