BARRINGTON – Jennifer Falat said she inherited her creative spirit from her mother, who had great style. Now, the Barrington resident has made a career out of making beautiful jewelry for her company, Jennifer Falat Designs. She talked to Barrington Life about what goes into making such pretty pieces.

How long ago did you start making jewelry?

About 10 years ago, and I turned it into a business seven years ago.

What are your favorite kinds of materials to work with?

Vintage beads and pieces that hold special meaning to people. I enjoy disassembling something that is broken or out of style and making it into something new. I had a customer that was given a long string of pearls at her college graduation 25 years ago. She gave it to me and told me to surprise her. I restrung it with Swarovski crystals, and made it into a shorter necklace, with a matching bracelet, and three pairs of matching earrings. She loved it, and is saving two pairs of the earrings for her children.

How often are you crafting pieces? How many do you make at a time?

In a perfect world, I am up before my son, and have a couple of hours to design, play and create in my art room. However, if I have a custom job, or am preparing for a show, then I schedule additional time in the evenings. The number of pieces varies. Sometimes I spend a couple of hours getting a design the way I like it, and sometimes they fall together quickly.

Where do you sell most of your jewelry?

Some of my designs are carried in Roots 2 in Barrington, and in The Serendipity Shop in Libertyville. Several more stores will be showcasing my jewelry next month. You can also find me on Facebook, where I have a sampling of my jewelry.

My current collection consists of a couple hundred pieces, and the best way to see it is to book a home party. I am also having a trunk show May 5, from noon to 4 p.m. It will be at the Ice House Mall in downtown Barrington, and a portion of the proceeds will be donated to H.A.R.P.S. Other stores in the Ice House Mall will also be participating with sales and special offers.

How do home parties work?

The hostess and her guests spend a couple of hours visiting with each other and shopping, and the guests that cannot attend can also shop online. The hostess receives free jewelry just for having the show, and she also earns free jewelry based on the jewelry sales.
