Hilltop students learn about the world at Discovery Day
McHENRY – Hilltop Elementary School students combined exercise and cultural
awareness Wednesday as the school held its annual Discovery Day.
Kindergarten through third-grade students spent the day going from station to station learning facts and rituals from the other six continents.
The students learned African dances, named the countries in Europe through a European relay race, and made carnival masks from South America, among other activities.
“Being an engaged learner is what all teachers try to do,” said Joan Jensema, a physical education teacher at Hilltop. “We feel we have a unique area that kids can learn and still be moving or learning through other specialties.”
More than 50 parent volunteers helped guide the students through the 16 stations.
Hilltop has done the daylong event for more than 10 years.
“They’re just so excited,” Jensema said. “They’re learning because they are engaged and enjoying it. And I think that’s the best way for children to learn.”
