Knox County sheriff seeks woman missing for years

GALESBURG — The Knox County Sheriff's Department is asking for the public's help finding a woman who disappeared decades ago, as they seek clues to help identify skeletal remains.

Authorities would like to know whether Helen "Ruth" Alps is alive — or whether skeletal remains found in the abandoned Purington Brickyard in East Galesburg in 1996 are hers.

For years, officials believed the remains were those of Lula Cora Hood. But Hood was found alive in Florida two years ago.

The sheriff's department says Alps was last seen in the Knox County area in the late-1980's. She was described as a nature lover who often took walks in the brickyards.

Detective Sgt. Jason Landers says he's trying to determine if there's any record of Alps being alive anywhere. She'd be 71.
