Crystal Lake police begin Memorial Day crackdown

Published: Friday, May 10, 2013 5:30 a.m. CDT

CRYSTAL LAKE – Crystal Lake police officers will be out in full force Friday through May 27 to make sure residents take time to remember safe driving practices during their Memorial Day gatherings.

The department will intensify enforcement against drunken drivers and seatbelt law violators throughout that period to help combat what has become one of the most dangerous times of the year for drivers, especially during Memorial Day weekend.

According to the Crystal Lake police, there were six deaths and nearly 600 injuries on Illinois roads during Memorial Day weekend in 2012. Three of those deaths were alcohol related.

The crackdown, which will occur primarily between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. each day, comes after a Drive to Survive campaign by the department from May 1 through May 5 for Cinco de Mayo celebrations. The department issued 73 citations, including three for alcohol or drug related offenses.
