SleepOut for Shelter raises $70,000 to fight homelessness

McHENRY – The number of participants, counties represented and dollars raised broke records at this year’s fourth annual SleepOut for Shelter, which was held May 11.

Strong winds and record-low temperatures could not keep 600 people from raising more than $70,000 for homeless services through McHenry County PADS, a division of Pioneer Center for Human Services.

Supporters gathered at Living Waters Lutheran Church in Crystal Lake and listened to testimonials from Pioneer Center clients about homelessness.

Many participants pitched tents or built a cardboard box shelter to spend the night outside.

The event also included an Ultimate Team Challenge that pitted county businesses and organizations against each other to raise the most money for McHenry County PADS.  For the second year in a row, Team Living Waters led by the Rev. Carol Gates and congregants from Living Waters Lutheran Church won the challenge by raising more than $3,300.

For the first time, SleepOut for Shelter went multicounty through a partnership with PADS Lake County. All money raised by each event remained within its county.
