McHENRY – The number of participants, counties represented, and dollars raised all broke record at this year’s fourth annual SleepOut for Shelter, which was held May 11.
Strong winds and record low temperatures could not keep 600 people from helping raise more than $70,000 for homeless services through McHenry County PADS, a division of Pioneer Center for Human Services.
Supporters gathered at Living Waters Church in Crystal Lake and listened to testimonials from Pioneer Center clients about homelessness. Many participants pitched their tents or built a cardboard box shelter and spent the entire night outside.
The event also included an Ultimate Team Challenge that pitted businesses and organizations throughout the county against each other to raise the most money for McHenry County PADS. For the second year in a row, Team Living Waters led by the Rev. Carol Gates and congregants from Living Waters Lutheran Church in Crystal Lake won the challenge by raising the most money of any team – more than $3,300.
Plus, for the first time, SleepOut for Shelter went multi-county through a partnership with PADS Lake County. All money raised by each event remained within its county.
