WHEELING – The village board in the Chicago suburb of Wheeling is to consider an ordinance prohibiting assault weapons.

Village attorney James V. Ferolo says he will present trustees with a draft of an ordinance by July 1. Ferolo says it will be similar to Cook County’s ordinance.

Ferolo said those violating the ordinance could be punished with a fine up to $1,000 and up to six months in jail.

A majority of Wheeling trustees reportedly supported considering the ordinance. One trustee, Kenneth Brady, opposed drafting an ordinance. He favored letting the state regulate the issue.
