HOOPESTON, Ill. (AP) — Firefighters in central Illinois say a massive fire at a tire-recycling facility is under control.
Flames erupted at J&R Used Tire Service in Hoopeston early Wednesday and heavy, black smoke was seen for miles as the 400,000-square-foot brick facility burned.
The Champaign News-Gazette reported environmental officials were at the property monitoring air quality.
Meanwhile, crews continued spraying the building with water on Thursday to control hot spots.
No one inside the building was injured, but nearby homes were evacuated and freight service was stopped on an adjacent rail line.
The (Kankakee) Daily Journal said firefighters were brought in from 17 departments.
The cause of fire remains under investigation.
