CHICAGO — The drowning of a 2-year-old suburban Chicago child Tuesday is the fourth drowning reported to the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services in the past week.

The agency is reminding parents and caregivers of the need to constantly supervise children when they're near water.

Drowning is the leading cause of accidental death of toddlers and preschoolers. Agency spokesman Dave Clarkin says a child can drown in seconds in as little as one inch of water.

The department launched a campaign called "Get Waterwise ... SUPERVISE!" to provide life-saving advice in 2002. The campaign was expanded this year with the distribution of water safety posters and fact sheets to 14,000 day care providers across Illinois.
