Cubs designate Marmol for assignment

The Cubs decided they had seen enough of reliever Carlos Marmol's struggles and designated him for assignment today.

Marmol, 30, went 2-4 with two saves and a 5.86 ERA in 31 relief appearances this season. He allowed 18 earned run in 27 2/3 innings pitched. In eight seasons with the Cubs, which included an All-Star appearance in 2008, Marmol posted a 23-32 record and 3.50 ERA with 117 saves.

The Cubs selected the contract of outfielder Brian Bogusevic from Triple-A Iowa, adding him to the 40-man roster. Bogusevic, 29, hit .319 with 14 doubles, three triples, 10 home runs, 32 RBIs and 16 stolen bases in 78 games with Iowa this season.

Third baseman Ian Stewart's suspension was upheld and he has been granted his unconditional release from Triple-A Iowa.
