ROCKFORD (AP) — Rockford College is now officially renamed Rockford University.

The change took effect on Monday. WNIJ radio reports (http://bit.ly/13h0Sp3) that administrators think the name change will better reflect the school's mission.

Trustees unanimously approved the name change earlier this year for the 165-year-old institution.

Rockford College began in 1847 as Rockford Female Seminary. It later became Rockford College, and the college became coeducational in 1958.
