HARVARD – A 13-year-old boy drowned Monday evening after a canoe he was in tipped over, the Harvard Fire Protection District said.
The boy was in the canoe with two other boys in a storm water detention pond on the 1100 block of Apple Valley Road, said Battalion Chief Daniel Danczyk.
When the canoe tipped over, one of the boys was able to swim to shore, and one was rescued. The fire department was called about 7:30 p.m., Danczyk said.
Dancyzk said the water was 15 to 20 feet deep.
Danczyk said the firefighters were able to find the boy about hour after they were called. When he was brought to shore, firefighters did try lifesaving measures. The boy was transported to Mercy Harvard Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The other boys were not hurt, Danczyk said.
All boys are believed to be Harvard residents, Danczyk said. It was not clear on how the canoe tipped over.
The fire department did not release the boy's name. A phone call to the McHenry County Coroner's office was not returned late Monday night.
Crews from Wonder Lake, Woodstock, Cary, Fox River Grove and McHenry, were among those called to the scene.
