Donated property to remain vacant, Fox Lake village president says

FOX LAKE – The Fox Lake Village Board accepted a donated lot near Crestview Drive and Route 59 at its meeting this week.

The property, the back half of which is marshes, will remain vacant, Village President Donny Schmit said. It will not create any additional maintenance costs because it will be kept natural.

It will be used to meet federal regulations that require the village to offset impervious surfaces, such as parking lots, that it builds, he said.

The property had been bought by the donor’s husband because he enjoyed birdwatching, Schmit said.

He has since died, and she continues to have to pay taxes on it.

“We thought if she wanted to give it to us, we’d take it,” Schmit said.
