PROPHETSTOWN (AP) — Northwestern Illinois officials say an overnight fire destroyed eight buildings in the small Whiteside County community of Prophetstown.

Dispatcher Karen Stuart says Monday that the blaze began in a downtown restaurant around 2 a.m. and spread to nearby buildings. They'll have to be torn down.

Other buildings received water damage.

No major injuries were reported, but she says the Red Cross was helping residents of about eight apartments who were displaced.

The fire was mostly extinguished after crews from nearly three dozen different agencies responded, draining the town's water supply to fight the flames. Firefighters were still working to control hotspots.

Prophetstown has around 2,100 residents and is about 30 miles northeast of Moline.
