Defense against tyrants

Published: Wednesday, July 24, 2013 5:30 a.m. CDT

To the Editor:

Responding to Nat Leighton’s July 9 letter.

Mr. Leighton is correct when he equates real bravery to standing up to one’s fears. But having the proper tools with which to confront these “bogeymen” could make all the difference between winning or not.

Perhaps Mr. Leighton has led a sheltered life, or because of the rose-colored glasses through which he gazes, he feels the only real bogeymen left are in one’s imagination. A quick review of history might bring things into better focus.

His views on gun ownership follow the liberal media’s characterization of firearm enthusiasts as a lunatic fringe of gun nuts and ignorant reactionaries.

He implies that the main agenda of the NRA is to push the economic interests of firearms’ companies. What products, however, would an organization named the National Rife Association be likely to promote?

Conspiracy theories aside, the NRA is, in fact, a collective voice for freedom, made up of millions of patriotic Americans. Its members are united in the belief that the Second Amendment was conceived to empower the citizenry against tyranny in all forms. After all, the mugger, rapist or an abusive government are just different forms of the same tyrant, are they not? Our ability to keep and bear arms is our last and final defense against tyrants both foreign and domestic.

Wouldn’t it be better to have a gun and not need it than to need one and not have it?
