Help the hungry

To the Editor:

I am concerned about those people who are struggling to put enough food on the table in our area.

The Meal Gap study released by Feeding America in June, indicates that 27,920 people in McHenry County don’t have enough to eat. Sadly, 14,820 of them are children.

I support the work that Northern Illinois Food Bank is doing to provide food to hungry neighbors in their time of need. Through 700 feeding programs throughout 13 counties, including our district, Northern Illinois Food Bank is providing food to more than 60,000 people weekly. If you have not already, please contact Northern Illinois Food Bank to learn more about their efforts and the relevance of hunger.

This spring, the Chicago Tribune reported on a Brookings Institute study said that poverty in the Chicago suburbs has grown 99 percent in the past decade. In fact, more impoverished people live in the suburbs (724,233) than the city of Chicago (650,095).

Pantries help about 10 percent of the need, while government programs such as SNAP help 90 percent. The U.S. House reduced SNAP, which will increase hunger.

Hunger needs to be an issue of high priority. Please learn more and assist in helping feed those in our community who are facing hunger.
