The Cary Village Board on Tuesday honored nine people for their roles and help during a police standoff in May.

On May 26, a man barricaded himself a house in a domestic-related incident. The man came out of the house with a gun to his head and committed suicide with a self-inflicted gunshot.  The incident ended with no other injuries.

"While the outcome was tragic, the efforts of telecommunicators, police officers and neighbors secured the scene and prevented injury to other people," Acting Police Chief Ed Fetzer said.

Police Officers Anthony Steinke, Josh Victor, Jason Williamson and Jason Ultes, and Sergeant Mike Roth received the Meritorious Police Duty Award.

Officers set up a perimeter and tried to get the man to surrender.

Roth also was recognized for his compassion and professionalism in dealing with the families.

SEECOM telecommunicators Becky Kochanski and Katie Rice received the Honorable Service Award from the police department for keeping their composure and relaying crucial information, during the incident

Neighbors Patrick and Nancy Kaveney provided safe shelter to others before police arrived and while the incident was resolved. They received the Citizen Award for Distinguished Service.
