McHenry County Historical Society hosts singalong

Published: Tuesday, Sept. 10, 2013 11:56 p.m. CDT

MARENGO – The public is invited to visit the 1895 Riley Methodist Church on Sunday for a singalong with the McHenry County Historical Society.

Riley Township native Janet Hayes and her daughter, Lynette Eeg, are collaborating to come up with a selection of songs. They will include patriotic songs, old favorites, popular tunes from the 19th and 20th centuries and a few hymns, accompanied by keyboardist Mary Ellen Heelan of Heelan Music in Cary.

Heelan, a Downers Grove native, offers music therapy and entertainment. She earned degrees in history and music therapy and an MBA from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University.

The singalong will run from 2 to 4 p.m. at the church, 9316 Riley Road in Marengo.

To get there, take Route 23 south of Marengo to Anthony Road. Turn right (west) to Riley Road. The church is just north of the intersection, between the school and the township hall.

Parking is permitted in the school lot. Refreshments and conversation will follow.

A selection of religious songbooks, culled from the society’s collection, will be for sale. Many of these rare books date to the mid-1800s.

Like the society’s 1885 Perkins Hall in Seneca Township, there are no restrooms. Attendees should plan accordingly.
