D-156 homecoming parade's date moves, powder puff returns
McHENRY – The homecoming parade for District 156 will be marching down Green Street on a different day this year.
The parade was moved to a Thursday from its traditional step-off on a Friday because the district already had an early release for staff development planned for homecoming week's Friday, said Carl Vallianatos, the assistant principal at McHenry West High School.
The parade will start about 1:50 p.m. Sept. 26 – the start time depends on when the rally scheduled for 1 p.m. at McCracken Athletic Field ends – and will leave from the parking lot of Knox Park's Pete J. Merkel Aquatic Center.
The floats, which are being made that week, will head north on Green Street, ending at North Green and Waukegan streets on the north side of McHenry East High School.
Parking in Knox Park pool's parking lot will be for parade floats and vehicles only.
Homecoming week in McHenry also marks the return of powder puff football, Vallianatos said.
East and West campuses will compete Sept. 25 at McCracken Athletic Field, at the corner of Kane Avenue and North Green Street.
The junior game will start at 6:30 p.m., followed by the coronation around 7:45 p.m. The night will conclude with the senior game, to start sometime around 8 p.m.
Powder puff had been eliminated from the homecoming festivities about a decade ago because of misbehavior, Vallianatos said.
It continued unofficially over the years with students and parents organizing it, but the district decided to bring it back for this year, he said.
