Voting for victims

To the Editor:

I am extremely tired of reading all the articles about child abuse, domestic violence and sexual assault in which the McHenry County state’s attorney offers a plea bargain and the McHenry County judge accepts it.

These are very serious crimes with very serious ongoing consequences for the victims. So often, the more serious charges are dropped, and the sentencing becomes a mere slap on the hand to the perpetrator and a big slap in the face to the victims.

But the state’s attorney gets the conviction – a “win” for their résumé. I’m not sure how well they sleep at night with such a win, however.

I would like to see a change in the law where plea bargains are not allowed for these crimes, and I would like to remind everyone that we vote for or against these judges.

We should be holding the judge accountable. Perhaps the Northwest Herald could keep us better informed of the judges’ records when elections come up. When we go to the polls, and please do, let’s starting voting for the victims.
