Learn about UFOs at Crystal Lake library talk

“UFOs and Government: A Historical Inquiry” will be presented from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday at the Crystal Lake Public Library, 126 W. Paddock St.

Author Richard Thieme will examine how and why the U.S. government has responded to the UFO phenomenon over the years.

Crystal Lake library to show ‘The Great Gatsby’

The Wednesday movie at the Crystal Lake Public Library, 126 W. Paddock St., will be “The Great Gatsby.”

The film, rated PG-13, will be shown at noon. Attendees may bring their own lunch.

Learn about Marengo history at presentation

Where was the first religious service held in the Marengo-Union area, and who conducted that service? Alice Wagner will give a brief synopsis about the history of area churches and then field questions about the community’s local history.

This event will take place at 10 a.m. Wednesday upstairs at the library, 200 S. State St., Marengo.

McHenry library to host ‘Polar Exploration’

“Polar Exploration” will be presented from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at the McHenry Public Library, 809 N. Front St.

Polar expedition leader Keith Heger will share his stories from travels to the North Pole and South Pole.

AARP Safe Driving course offered in McHenry

An AARP Safe Driving course will take place from noon to 4 p.m. Thursday and Friday at the McHenry Public Library, 809 N. Front St., McHenry.

Participants may get a discount on their auto insurance if they complete this two-part program. The cost is $12 for AARP members who present their card and $14 for nonmembers. The fee should be paid with a check on the first day.

Algonquin library to host ‘The Haunting’

“The Haunting: The Unique, Spooky, Scary, Supernatural Show” will be presented from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Algonquin Area Public Library, 2600 Harnish Drive.

Magician William Pack will give an interactive performance of spine-tingling stories, eerie history and inexplicable supernatural occurrences. It is for those 13 and older.

‘The Counselor’ opens in theaters

“The Counselor,” starring Brad Pitt, Goran Visnjic, Michael Fassbender and Javier Bardem, opens in theaters.

A lawyer finds himself in over his head when he gets involved in drug trafficking. 

The movie is rated R for graphic violence, some grisly images, strong sexual content and language.

‘Bad Grandpa’ stars Knoxville, Nicoll

“Bad Grandpa,” starring Johnny Knoxville, Jackson Nicoll, Spike Jonze and Georgia Cates, opens in theaters.

Irving Zisman, 86, is on a journey across America with the most unlikely companion: his 8 year-old grandson, Billy. 

The movie is rated R for strong crude and sexual content throughout, language, some graphic nudity and brief drug use.

‘Shaun of the Dead’ to be shown in Woodstock

“Shaun of the Dead,” rated R, will be shown at midnight Friday at the Woodstock Theatre, 209 Main St., Woodstock. 

Get in the Halloween spirit with the screening of the critically acclaimed zombie comedy. Zombies from The Haunted Square will appear before the movie.

Costume party set at Woodstock Opera House
