The Land Conservancy sets work day events
WOODSTOCK – The Land Conservancy of McHenry County is looking for volunteers at three land restoration events the end of October.
• Gateway Park Oak Rescue: 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at 21313 Heritage Lane, Harvard. Join volunteers at the future Gateway Park on the south end of Harvard to continue clearing brush from around some of the oldest oaks in the county. This workday will require walking moderate distances over level terrain. To get there from the intersection of Routes 23 and 14 in Harvard, go south on Route 23 and take the first right onto Heritage Lane and pull over onto the side of the road. The nearest address is 21313 Heritage Lane, Harvard.
• Ryder's Woods Work Party: 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday at 750 E. Kimball Ave., Woodstock. Help clear non-native brush at Ryder's Woods, a 23-acre Woodstock city park. This area used to be a dense buckthorn jungle, but ongoing work has transformed it into an open oak woodland. This workday will require walking moderate distances over rolling terrain. To get there from the intersection of Routes 14 and 47, head north on Route 47, left on Lake Avenue and left on Kimball Avenue. The park will be on the right.
• Acorn Lane Restoration Day: 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 30 at 90 W. Acorn Lane, Lake in the Hills. This site is on Randall Road, making it an important natural area in a heavily developed part of the county. Volunteers will be clearing willows and invasive brush, allowing the native wildflowers to flourish. This workday will require moderate amounts of walking over hilly terrain. To get there from the corner of Randall Road and Algonquin Road in Lake in the Hills, go north on Randall and turn right (east) onto the first street (Acorn Lane). Park in the Ace Hardware parking lot. The nearest address is 90 W. Acorn Lane, Lake in the Hills.
No experience is necessary. Volunteers should dress to work outdoors, and bring work gloves. Tools and refreshments provided. For information, contact Melissa at firstname.lastname@example.org or 815-337-9502.
