Roundup: Cary-Grove, Johnsburg win at Lake Zurich girls basketball tourney
Cary-Grove and Johnsburg both won opening-round games Wednesday at the Lake Zurich Turkey Thriller girls basketball tournament.
Katie Barker scored 19 points and was 8 of 9 from the free throw line to lead C-G to a 40-33 win against Elk Grove.
C-G (2-0) took advantage of second-chance opportunities, pulling down 26 offensive rebounds, led by Candace Cunningham with eight, Barker with six and Abby Jakubicek and Karisa Wilczynski both with four.
Kayla Toussaint hit three 3-pointers and scored 16 points to lead Johnsburg to a 49-43 win against Lakes. Also for Johnsburg, Maddie Himpelmann went 6 of 6 from the line and scored 14 points.
Woodstock 53, Marengo 36: At Burlington, Selena Juarez scored 12 points and Dakota Brand added 11 for the Blue Streaks (1-1) in a win at the Burlington Central tournament.
Lynsey Hoeske scored 15 for the Indians (0-1).
Elgin Academy Tournament: At Elgin, Alden-Hebron opened its season with a 65-33 win against Elgin Academy in the first game of the tournament. Jacqueline Walters led the way for the Giants with 22 points. Emily Webber contributed 10 points and Hannah Warren and Brooklyn Hilton each finished with eight points in the win.
South Elgin 2,850, Huntley 2,788: At South Elgin, Grant Gardner bowled a 594 series with a team-high 228 game for the Red Raiders.
