Our View: Thumbs up to keeping tax levies flat

The Northwest Herald Editorial Board offers this week’s thumbs up and thumbs down:

Thumbs up: To the McHenry County Board, the McHenry County College Board and other government agencies that are approving flat tax levies for next fiscal year. State law allows taxing bodies to increase their levy – the amount of money they can collect from taxpayers – each year by the rate of inflation. All too often, these taxing bodies seek the maximum without consideration to the taxpayers who continuously have to give more. We salute the county and college boards as well as other governments that are freezing their rates. Some municipalities, such as Huntley and Woodstock, have done the same.

Thumbs down: To area municipalities who are raising their property tax levies instead of finding other solutions to budget deficiencies. Taxing bodies including the city of McHenry, Johnsburg School District 12, Woodstock School District 200, among others, are raising their levies. Taxpayers have to make adjustments with personal budgets to afford high property taxes. These taxing bodies should do the same instead of asking taxpayers for more.

Thumbs up: To all of the area organizations that have rallied to support tornado victims. Local schools and organizations have collected donations to send to those communities impacted. Even the Chicago Bears and St. Louis Rams, who play each other Sunday, have donated time or items for auction to benefit those impacted by the tornadoes that tore through Illinois on Sunday.

Thumbs down: To allowing cellphone use on planes. The Federal Communications Commission is considering lifting its longtime prohibition on making cellphone calls on airplanes, saying it is time “to review our outdated and restrictive rules.” Imagine a three-hour flight next to a guy who yaps on his phone the entire time.
