To the Editor:
I was a member of the U.S. Navy in the late 1960s through the 1970s, and I had never gotten around to attending a Veterans Day celebration – until this year.
A friend told me about planned Veterans Day activities at Crystal Lake South High School, and, after a few days, I called to RSVP.
On the morning of Veterans Day, I was warmly greeted and welcomed by students along the sidewalk leading to the main entrance of the school. Inside, I joined a couple of friends, and, as we moved toward the gym, we passed through an archway of red, white and blue balloons. Then there were more students. One of them escorted us into the gym.
At the far end of the gym was a huge American flag, and to our right the school band was playing. I looked up and saw that the bleachers on both sides of the gym packed with students, and I felt some emotions begin to stir as I thought “Wow, look at this!”
I wish there was space to mention all the details of the program, but I will say that it was impressive, emotional and much appreciated. The speeches, music, memorials and pageantry were all done so well.
Congratulations, and thank you to the cast of thousands who made this event happen.
My lasting memory of this day will be the warmth, enthusiasm and respectfulness of the students of Crystal Lake South High School. Thank you, Gators!
