No kudos for Hultgren
To the Editor:
Regarding Anita Parrot’s letter to the editor (“Kudos to Hultgren,” Nov. 13, when U.S. Rep. Randy Hultgren voted to not increase the nation’s debt limit, his heart was in the right place, but not his brain.
I completely agree that we must curb our spending, but capping the debt ceiling is a very short-sighted and irresponsible solution.
There are thousands of retirees in McHenry County, and millions throughout the country. Many of us have 401(k) or other retirement accounts that supplement our meager Social Security benefits. If Mr. Hultgren had succeeded in not raising the debt ceiling, the markets throughout the world would have been thrown into financial chaos, and the value of all those 401(k) accounts could have dropped to nothing.
After the vote, I sent Mr. Hultgren an email with the above points. His response simply repeated that we must curb our spending.
I emailed Mr. Hultgren again, asking what his plan was to curb our spending, other than capping the debt ceiling. No response. Sorry, Mr. Hultgren, no kudos. In fact, you are on probation.
