CHICAGO — A former Chicago gynecologist was sentenced to 18 years in prison after he was convicted of raping a patient who was eight months pregnant.
Bruce Sylvester Smith was sentenced Tuesday for two counts of criminal sexual assault in the 2002 attack.
Authorities say Smith was providing prenatal care to the 31-year-old woman. He wasn't arrested until 2010 when prosecutors admitted "mistakes were made" because Smith's DNA sample was never taken after the woman reported the assault.
Smith testified that the woman initiated the sexual contact during an exam and said sex between the two was consensual.
His medical license was suspended in 2009 after several women came forward to accuse him of sexual misconduct and was revoked in 2011 for unrelated reasons.
He was never charged in any other cases.
