Swimming Insider: McHenry's Schopen Athlete of Week

Athlete of the Week

Trey Schopen

McHenry, so.

Schopen had several strong swims during Saturday's Cougar Classic at Vernon Hills. The invitational is a college-distance meet and the sophomore placed second in the 1,000-yard freestyle in 10:33.01 before winning the 200 butterfly in 2:03.13.

"He had a pretty good day," assistant coach Natalie Schawel said. "He's really coming along this year."

The good results came after winter break, a time where teams generally do their most intensive training, which is a good sign for Schopen and the Warriors moving forward.

Noteworthy

Name change: Woodstock co-op will host its annual invite Jan 25. but hopefully under a new name.

Coach Ian Shanahan has put in a bid with the athletic department to have the annual meet named after former swim coach Mary Landa, who died unexpectedly last summer.

Landa was a physical education, driver's education and health teacher at Woodstock and was the head coach of the swimming teams for 10 seasons during the 1980s and 90s. Landa was still involved with the swim teams as she coached the summer programs and attended nearly every meet.

"We haven't gotten it approved yet but I don't see a reason as to why it wouldn't be," Shanahan said. "She meant a lot to this program and was super involved. We thought that this would be a nice thing to do and a good way to remember her."

Interest: Woodstock co-op is not lacking in numbers and has 27 swimmers, including several seniors who came out for the team for the first time and seven freshmen.

The high numbers are following a stacked 2013 season that sent two swimmers to the state meet and just missed qualifying a relay team by less than one-tenth of a second.

"We graduated a lot of our best guys. Our season's going pretty well," Shanahan said.

The Blue Streaks are led by senior Liam DeWane, who is having a nice season including several wins in the backstroke.
