Prep Roundup: Marengo wins 15-team IMSA Tournament

Kellie Krenezlok bowled a 616 series with a high game of 211 to lead the Marengo girls bowling team to a first-place finish Saturday in the 15-team IMSA Tournament at Mardi Gras Lanes in DeKalb.

The Indians finished with a score of 2,704, more than 300 pins ahead of second-place Ottawa.

Dominique Bailey added a 589 series for Marengo while teammate Caitlyn Nakoneczny bowled a 505. Both Megan Hanelt and Rachel Baumann bowled 497s to round out the scoring.

Woodstock co-op took seventh with 2,126.

BOYS BOWLING

Lake Zurich Tournament: At Brunswick Zone in Deerfield, Marengo finished 18th in the 22-team field. The Indians were led by Dustin Termini’s 598 series, Mike Villarreal’s 525 and Octavio Diaz’s 511.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Huntley 59, Jacobs 42: At Huntley, Ali Andrews scored a game-high 24 points for the Red Raiders (15-3 overall, 5-0 Fox Valley Conference Valley Division), and Sam Andrews added 21 in the win.

Jacobs was led by Tiffany Frighetto’s 18 points, all of which came on 3-pointers. Jenni Barnec added 12 points in the loss for the Golden Eagles (3-15, 1-4 FVC Valley).

Dundee-Crown 41, McHenry 39: At Carpentersville, Melissa Barker scored a team-high nine points on three 3-pointers to lead the Chargers (6-15, 1-3 FVC Valley) in the win.

McHenry’s Carly Mattson scored a game-high 12 points, and Alex Martens added 10 to lead the Warriors (8-13, 0-5 FVC Valley).

Grayslake Central 58, Woodstock North 45: At Grayslake, Ashley Jones scored a team-high 11 points and teammate Jenifer Crain added nine in the loss for the Thunder (5-12, 0-4 FVC Fox).

Grayslake Central (12-5, 4-0 FVC Fox) made 29 of 58 free throws in the win.

Johnsburg 48, Hampshire 47: At Hampshire, Jazza Johns scored a team-high 15 points and teammate Trace Chase added 13 in the win in FVC Fox Division play. Katie Poczkalski also was in double figures with 10 points for the Skyhawks (8-11, 3-2)

Emma Benoit scored a game-high 20 points for Hampshire (7-9, 2-4) with Sara Finn adding 14 in the loss.

Marian Central 53, St. Francis 49: At Wheaton, Sarah Benigni scored a game-high 20 points to lead the Hurricanes in a Suburban Christian Conference Blue Division win.

Hannah Davis scored 12 and Ellen Koscielniak added 10 for Marian (9-5, 3-2 SCC Blue).

BOYS SWIMMING

Maine South Relays: At Park Ridge, Jacobs co-op finished sixth in the six-team invite with 80 points. Carl Sandburg (184) won the invite.

WRESTLING

Grayslake North Quadrangular: At Grayslake, Richmond-Burton lost to host Grayslake North, 53-24, and Maine South, 45-21.

Gavin Sutton and Grant Sutton each won both of their matches for the Rockets, one by technical fall while the other was a major decision. Garret Sutton and Clayton McKimmy also went 2-0 for R-B.

Waubonsie Valley Quadrangular: At Aurora, Crystal Lake Central went 3-1 in the quad losing only to Deerfield, 48-21.

The Tigers earned wins over Lake Park (40-33), Lemont (48-27) and New Trier (39-33). Central’s Mike Zelasco defeated one of the top wrestlers in Class 3A in Deerfield’s Colton Emmerich by a 13-8 decision.

Geneva Tournament: At Geneva, Harvard took fifth place behind a first-place finish from Adam Freimund at 285 pounds.

Justin Wilcox (106) placed third while Anthony Luis (113) and Matthew Wheeler (160) each placed fourth for the Hornets. Jose Mejia (170), Bryton Crosby (182) and Mauricio Espain (220) took sixth in the tournament.

Polo Invitational: At Polo, Alden-Hebron’s Colton Cashmore won all three of his matches by fall at 152 pounds, including the championship match.

Cashmore defeated St. Bede’s Andre Jurr by fall in 3:31 to win the title at 152 and improve his record to 14-2. Joshua Johnson placed fourth at 138, losing the third-place match to Glenbard North’s Joe Czemec, 3-2.

The Giants, who have only three wrestlers, placed 13th out of 16 teams in the invite.
