McHENRY – The McHenry Police Department will be participating in a statewide crackdown over the Super Bowl weekend.

The department will be running special patrols Jan. 31 through Feb. 2 looking for drunk drivers and seat belt law violators, according to a news release.

A state law that went into effect Jan. 1, 2012, requires all passengers in a vehicle to wear seat belts, not just the driver.

The crackdown is funded using federal traffic safety dollars administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation.

The department recommends partygoers to designate a sober driver, call a taxi, use public transportation or spend the night where they're watching the game. They also recommend people report drunk drivers and wear their seat belts.
