CHAMPAIGN — Authorities are warning drivers to take it easy on central Illinois roads as the latest round of winter weather moves across the region.

Snow and sleet fell across central Illinois starting Monday morning, accompanied in some places by thunder and lighting. The National Weather Service says as much as 5 or 6 inches of new snow is possible in some locations.

Illinois State Police say dozens of vehicles slid off central Illinois interstates and police had responded to a handful of accidents. Only minor injuries were reported.

Airports in Champaign, Springfield and Bloomington reported some delayed and cancelled flights.

Melting could start soon, though.

The National Weather Service says high temperatures across the region are expected to top out near 40 Tuesday and Wednesday and near 50 on Thursday.
