To the Editor:
Reading the Northwest Herald article about the unfair property system made me extremely angry.
We actually have someone in Springfield who has been trying to fight for us – Rep. Jack Franks, who has been pushing a common sense law saying that property taxes can’t go up when home values go down. He now has a new bill to put a referendum on property taxes on the ballot. Until that article, I had no idea that the reason Franks’ previous attempts were blocked was because local governments paid lobbyists to stop them.
Using our tax dollars to pay for lobbyists is disgusting. Our County Board has used our hard-earned money to advocate for positions that are expressly against the taxpayers’ interest. While I try to avoid being surprised by anything that happens in Springfield or Washington anymore, what our county government is doing to us is beyond the pale.
Everyone in this state needs to stand up for themselves and refuse to continue being treated like observers in what is supposed to be our government. Franks’ referendum will give us a chance to do that in November, and we should all vote “yes.”
