Bikers, walkers will have new path near Navy Pier

CHICAGO – Construction begins next week on an elevated path meant to help bikers and walkers safely navigate a heavily used area near Chicago’s Navy Pier.

Officials held a groundbreaking ceremony on Tuesday for the so-called Navy Pier Flyover.

The 16-foot-wide elevated path will be part of the city’s 18-mile Lakefront Trail. It’ll allow bicyclists and pedestrians to avoid congested intersections near Navy Pier, one of the city’s most popular tourist attractions.

Officials say the $60 million project is partially funded by federal grants meant to lessen congestion and improve air quality. It should be completed in 2018.
