Two 17-year-old boys from Harvard have been charged with burglary after they vandalized the inside of a church, the McHenry County Sheriff's Office said.

About 8:55 a.m. Sunday, the sheriff's office responded to the First United Methodist Church at 23815 Route 173 in unincorporated McHenry County near Chemung for a burglary.

Deputies found the offenders broke a window to get into the church, and then sprayed a fire extinguisher on the inside, according to a sheriff's office news release.

After canvassing the neighborhood, deputies arrested two 17-year-old boys, according to the news release.

The boys from Harvard were charged with burglary to a place of worship, criminal damage to property, theft and criminal trespass.

No other churches in the area were vandalized, the sheriff's office said.
