CYSTAL LAKE – Ten years ago, three people started National Gift Card Corp. in a small rented office space off McHenry Avenue in Crystal Lake.

They quickly outgrew their space and moved to Elgin. Ten years and even more growth later – the company now employs 48 – the company has moved back to Crystal Lake.

National Gift Card moved April 11 into a 52,000-square-foot facility at 300 Millennium Drive and started operations there the following Monday, Marketing Director Samantha Goldstein said.

Company CEO Adam Van Witzenburg was born and raised in Crystal Lake. The new facility is more than triple the space of the Elgin location.

“We need the space, and we decided, ‘Let’s go back to our roots.’ We’ve been very fortunate to grow as fast as we have, and we’re glad to be in the neighborhood,” Goldstein said.

You won’t find National Gift Card’s wares in stores – it exclusively sells the cards from more than 200 national brands to companies that use them in reward and incentive programs for their employees. National Gift Card either delivers the cards for the company to distribute or does it for them.

Over the past decade, it has processed more than 41 million gift cards valued at more than $850 million, and has invested more than $3.5 million in new technology for companies to fulfill their gift card needs.

National Gift Card, since its founding, has been recognized on Crain’s Chicago Business’ “Fast Fifty” list of the fastest-growing Chicago-area businesses based on five-year revenue growth. It has appeared several times on Inc. Magazine’s “Inc. 5,000” list of the fastest-growing private companies.

Goldstein said more companies are realizing the value of gift cards, from rewarding good work and offering a production incentive to encouraging participation in surveys and events. And employees like to use them.

“It’s more than a reward – it’s obviously useful, and it’s a nice incentive,” Goldstein said.

National Gift Card also maintains sales offices in Florida and Oregon.
