MARENGO – A brush fire that approached some buildings in rural Marengo took an hour to extinguish Friday.

The fire, which started near Collins Road and Maritime Lane, was the seventh or eighth brush fire the Marengo Fire Protection District has responded to in the past week, Lt. Steve Berry said.

Gusty winds and dry grass made the fire difficult to contain, but crews were able to keep it from spreading to nearby buildings, he said.

"It got pretty hot for a while," Berry said. "[The fire] moves at 15 mph when the wind does."

The Marengo Fire Protection District was assisted by the Woodstock and Union departments.

The fire is believed to have been started by the homeowner, and it got out of control, Berry said.
